Common App Essays/ Short Answer/ Additional Information

Hey everybody this is my first post to College Confidential, but I am certainly no stranger to the college-searching/ college-preparing process!

I am going to be a senior this coming school year, and I wanted to be prepared by writing the Common App essays; however, the Common App also requires a Short Answer section about extracurriculars. In addition, there is an optional additional information part that I am also going to fill out in order to provide colleges with the most information about me as possible.

I wasn't quite sure if it is bad to repeat myself in the three sections: for example, say I talk about my Community Service commitment in the short answer, and then make that a big part of my essay section. Should the information I include in the three sections be completely separate, or should I integrate ideas and characteristics about myself that I really want to stress to the colleges?

You don’t want to sound redundant, because adcoms will get bored with that QUICKLY. (remember, they go through tens or even hundreds of apps per day!)

Other than that, do what you feel is right. If you feel more comfortable integrating a single idea into both essays, go ahead.

Your app should be one cohesive thought. if community service is a big thing write an essay but maybe pick another ec in the short answer.

don’t put anything in the additional info section unless it’s really important. on the whole colleges ask you not to fill out that section unless it is to explain or clarify

As long as it tells a story, you’re fine.
