I've always considered Morocco to be a part of Africa, not of the Middle East (I'm a second generation Moroccan in the U.S) and so in filling out my Common App, I listed myself as African (father's side) and European (mother's side). Was this a mistake? I've submitted all applications.

This has always been an odd subject to address since colleges do such a poor job evaluating ethnicity in admissions. Basically, if you self identify as black or hispanic then you are in fact black or hispanic. This is ethnicity not race. But, if you don’t actually self identify as black and put black, that’s considered lying on your application and is grounds for rejection, and stripping your degree from you. Adcoms are aware of all of this.

I also think that w/e you write on your common app must also agree with the info on the last census. I think adcoms also look at the languages you speak as well as where your parents were born.

Interviewers might write that you look white, if you do look white, so keep that in mind as well.

I didn’t think the app said “African”, but rather “Black or African American”. Is that no longer true?
