Common App for Class of 2012

What are the essay questions for Common App?

The essay questions are:

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

Topic of your choice.

Thanks so much kameronsmith!! Very helpful.

@all: do you know where college does offer scholarship or full financial aid to their students?

Hey guys. A few days ago I went on the website for the common application to try and get a preview of what it is like. I thought the only way to do this is to register on the website. Of course I had not yet seen this thread and did not know that the class of 2012 cannot begin to fill it out until August 1st. So anyway, my question is: even though when I registered the application still addresses the class of 2011, on August 1st can I log in with this same account and apply as part of the class of 2012?

Sorry if my wording is a little confusing, I typed this a little quickly.

I’ve got some questions about extracurriculars/resumes on the Common App. If you’ve held a leadership position, should you explain what you did as that role? I know “President” really means a lot of different things depending on the club, person, etc., and being able to highlight what you did seems important. I just don’t know if that’s appropriate on the Common App, and where it would go.

Financial aid is mostly based on your family’s income level.
There are six need-blind schools for international students: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, MIT, Amherst.
Visit [Financial Aid & Scholarships - College Confidential](Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums) for more information on financial aid.

That account will not exist so you will have to register again.

Wow, I love how the person who started this thread calls himself “ivy bound.” Arrogant much?

Does anyone know when colleges begin to release their supplements to the Common App?

Lots of schools release supplements on the same day as the common app. Some non-common app schools already have their apps out (ie. Georgetown).

@082349

Ok. Thanks for the answer.

For the “Honors” section of the Common App, can the award be won by a group? My marching band won 3 national competitions while I was a member; does that count?

@sinohellenic
Relax, I actually am only applying to one ivy, and I chose this name because I knew people would react like you.

@082349 is there other option then ivies?

since many books give many sample application essays, can we somehow use the idea from their sample essays? or is it ‘illegal’? I felt that i’m so lost on the road to the college.

Samonuh, you can mention honors/awards won as part of a group in the extracurricular section. That section lets you put your position, what you did, and any significant awards you won in that EC for each EC.

@Chrisma369: I’m not sure what you mean. if you use for word any part of an sample essay you wrote as yours, that’s plagiarism. Idea? i mean most of the essays you speak towards your favorite EC or experience…I guess different people could have the same favorite EC.

@Chrisma369
I mean, the goal of the essay is show colleges what is unique about YOU or provide some additional insight about YOUR LIFE. Unless the essay you are basing your essay off of is spot on with your personality/life, etc., I would advise against it. Actually, I really would advise against it all together, unless you truly cannot come up with something else on your own. Any idea you come up with will probably be better than the one you are planning on using because it is YOUR OWN. That doesn’t mean you have to come up with a topic that’s never been written about before, but I just really think you shouldn’t base your essay off of another essay.

I just went on the site and there seems to be a way to start filling out the form online–is this the 2012 app?

No. The 2012 app is not available until August 1. You might be filling out the older 2010-2011 app that will be erased and removed by July 15.
