I just have some quick questions about the common app. I will be applying to colleges in the fall. I don't have a father in my life. All i know is his name and thats it. Do i just leave the rest blank? I know Im not going to track him down just for the common app. Also my mother is on disability and does not work. How would explain that in the parent section. Finally i am a only child so in the siblings section would i leave that totally blank? Thanks for your help in advance.

If you are the only child, you should leave the the sibling sections blank. Fill in what you do know about your parents: for instance, can you find out about the education of your father from your mother? For your mother, check unemployed for employment and explain the circumstances in the additional information section. Or, even better, speak to your guidance counselor and have him or her briefly mention your family’s circumstances in the recommendation letter.

Talking to your guidance counselor about these issues would be a good idea :). Good luck!
