Common App help!

Hi everyone!

I was wondering what the "Personal statement" is.

What kind of things do I have to write there and what is it used for?

Thanks! :)

You can read a number of good personal statements here:

Connecticut College : Admission - Essays that Worked
https://my.hamilton.edu/magazine/2003/fall/essays.html

Wait, so the ESSAY= PERSONAL STATEMENT everyone's talking about?

There's not like a separate section that tells you: here, write a personal statement, but rather it means, essay?

Usually that's the case.

Yep! on Common application it is refered to as "Personal Essay" which is nothing but "the" Essay.

Ooooh, thank you both! :)

I got another set of questions now...

So in my country, they made an educational reform the year after I enrolled in high school. Now the kids have to take a standardized exam in their senior year, and my generation is the last one that doesn't do that. So by the old system, if a student passes all grades with an, well, equivalent to what's called "A" average in US, then a student is exempt of final exam and only has to write a research paper and that's it. (otherwise a student has to take three exams+research paper)
My question is:
Since I will most likely pass with an "A" average again, I only have research paper to do. On the International supplement, there's a section that asks whether a school gives final exams. Since it doesn't, I should just attach copies of my past three year's grade reports and their official translations?
And since I spent my Junior year in US, should I also attach a copy of US grade report or just have that US high school send my transcript without my attaching those grade reports?

As for the "Elaborating about one of my EC" section in Common app, what exactly do I have to write there? Do I just go on about how much I like one certain activity or should I explain the reason why I am not doing theater in 12th grade anymore? While I was in US, my theater group leaders decided to focus more on their family and it dissolved. They're trying to gather people up again, but no activities yet.
Or should I attach another paper (/Word doc) explaining the situation?

Also, if my EC's don't fit into that 10 EC section in Common app, should I attach another paper with the list of activities?

And how do I go about hours/week in say, graphic editor position in school papers since we have meetings once a week for an hour. The rest, like editing graphics, or writing for the papers, we do in our free time and depending on the article or page I am doing, it takes me like 3 hours each. Yet I don't do that every single day or every week. There is just one period when I do it when I don't.

Once again,

Thanks for your help!

Bump!

I know it's long to read, but I would really appreciate help!
