So I'm a class 2015 student starting his common application and I had a question about the honors section on Common App? Does it look petty to top colleges, if I put things such as "school honor roll", or "national honor society"? Also, would it look bad if I put debate awards for state wide tournaments? Or perhaps, alternative qualifiers for nationals? Honestly I don't know, Just a kid trying to get into college. :O

You have a lot of freedom to put what you want… there aren’t really any “rules.” If you want to take up space, then you’re welcome to put school honour rolls and such. Why are you worried that those debate awards would look bad? They seem pretty impressive to me.

Where is the honors section? I can’t find it

“Common App” tab on top
“Education” tab on left
"Honors’ tab towards the bottom in the centre

Thanks for the feedback! I just don’t want to give off that vibe that I pride myself on petty, simple things.

School honor roll seems like a pointless one to put down imo. Colleges will see your transcripts and know that you’ve made A’s&B’s/A’s/whatever.
NHS is worth noting because standards vary from school to school and it involves a subjective component, typically. However, note that NHS is a school level honor and not national. :)

bump. so i have a question: would achievements in the arts count towards this? my fine arts achievements are the only ones that i have been recognized at a national/international level (and the questions ask you to indicate whether or not they were recognized at that level) so that is why i am wondering.

@zaktam Yes, they would count. And since you have been recognized at that high of a level, you should definitely include those honors. :)
