Common App Main essay - length ?

For the main "Why transfer + objectives" essay, if I have unusual circumstances and I really feel I want to explain, can I write a really long essay here?

I'm applying to Brown, Cornell and NYU. The essay is currently around 3 pages.

Would that hurt me? I really want to explain why I made the mistake of early admissions and why I want to transfer.

From what I’ve read and heard, it’s ok but try to be as concise as possible nonetheless. I remembering reading on CC about people who’ve written 4 page single-spaced essays and then got into Harvard and etc as transfers.

This is not like the original college essays where some funny gimmick essay was good enough for admissions, rather than a careful worded persuasive paper to demonstrate exactly why you need this - it’s completely different. Even for law school/business school, the essays are far simpler in scope (usually - some of the transfer essays may be very simple, again it totally depends on each individual’s case).

Thanks for your reply. Lots of thanks!

Mine was a little over 500 words. I chose this bench mark because that’s how long the main common app essay is supposed to be for freshmen applicants.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Would describing my life story in brief, leading to my poor decision in my current uni be alright though?

I used subtitles to divide the chapters of my life up, because mine is REALLY LONG now - 4 pages.

There is a section on the common app for you to explain any special circumstances. Don’t put them in your essay.

Major bad idea. Doesn’t mean you won’t get in. But this is a major bad idea.

IMO focusing on what’s good about the school you’re applying to is better than focusing on what’s bad about the school you’re currently at.

4 pages of why you made a bad choice? I’m not so sure.

^With that mind-set, how do you distinguish your “why transfer” essay with the “why do you want to transfer to x university”?

There’s a difference between why you want to transfer and why you picked school x. The common app essay is to explain your reasoning for transferring in general. The why transfer to x essay is to explain how school x rectifies the issues you explained in the first essay. The common app essay shouldn’t mention anything about any specific school, at most it should say what you are looking for. The second essay is about why the new school has what you’re looking for. (I know I may have just said the same thing twice but I wanted to be clear XD ).

Thanks all. I will put some in the additional information.

However, do I need to say what my current Uni CANNOT offer me ? And how I’ve developed as a XXX person in high school, so I feel that the I’m more suited to US universities?

I’m an international :D

Oh wow, seriously they wrote 4 pages and got in? Who?

Are you three pages single or double spaced? Cuz that’s a huge difference…

Single spaced… I’m trying to cut down.

My essay is currently a jumble of sorrow and regret. I’ve basically mentioned my regret at Early admissions and how immature I was.

Should I cut that out ?

Problem is, I can’t focus on what I want to achieve by transferring out of my current university WITHOUT relating back to my early ads choice… :(

For my common app essay, I’m simply talking about my current institution and why it’s not a good fit for me.

Carotene, no need to focus on your “mistake.” You could just say something like “I have grown so much from high school. Now I know that I am seeking _____ in order to _____.”
(The what you are looking for is conveniently what your current institution is NOT).

Thanks college_ruled!

My common app main essay is 470 words. I feel that I’m getting my point across but many of you do mention that you should have 500+. Would you guys consider 470 a good amount?
