Hi! So my school uses Naviance but hasn't quite explained it well. I requested from three teachers letters of recommendation, all of whom gladly accepted, and have started their Naviance rec's. My question is can they write recommendations even though I haven't submitted an app for some colleges and it will just update to send to those colleges when I send in an application or no? And I heard about teachers being able to send their recommendations to the Common App. If they do it through there will it update automatically if I add a college?

1st: I believe that they can send them at any time (of course, not after the deadline). Mine recommender had his ready a month ago, and because the Common App and Naviance are linked, it tells me my letters of rec are all set even though I haven’t applied yet.

IF YOU HAVE NOT LINKED THEM, it is important that you do. There is a small waiver that you fill out called the FERPA statement, which basically revokes your right to see the teacher recommendations. This is usually recommended because it shows that you have confidence in your teachers to write good things about you. You enter the email you are using for the Common App on Naviance, and they will be linked.

2nd: The Common App does not automatically tell your teachers if you add a college. I’m pretty sure you need to go back to the teacher in order to notify them that another college has been added.
