A question for those using Common App online or who are familiar with it.
The section for extracurricular activities is so brief--I need more space to list my activities. It is OK to send in an additional listing of my extracurriculars, by snail mail, to the colleges? Or, should I try to include a list (it would be unformatted, so I don't know how I would put hours/week and all that) in the "Additional Information" box on the Common App online? Sooo confusing.

u can do either one, i believe

thanks...any other opinions?
i'm just worried it'll look pretentious to send in a seperate list : /

anyone else?

well it does say to only list the ones you're most dedicated to....the primary ones to use the exact wording.

if you send in an extra list, they'll think all of those are you're primary EC's and it may make you look like a desperate college whore.

on the other hand, if it's like just 1-2 more EC's, i would probably put it into the additional information box.

I honestly think that they limit the number of spaces for a reason. I think they are trying to get a picture of you, what is important to you, what your priorities are, not how you spend every productive moment of your life. If everyone listed a dozen or more activities, the task of getting a clearer picture of the applicant is more difficult. So I wouldn't use an addendum just to be able to list everything. But I would not hesitate to use one to expand on the activities listed in the available slots on the app if my achievements in those activities were significant and too numerous to mention. Many people have spent a significant amount of time and effort and have some impressive awards to show for it -- most of the time it is next to impossible to list them in the little bitty space provided, especially when applicants cannot assume that adcoms will understand acronyms. Just spelling out one award can fill up the whole space.

Yes, that's pretty much the issue. I think I will just use the Additional Info section and not mail in a separate list. I just wanted to know what most people did.

I too had more ecs than would fit under the section on the common app. I read the section to mean that one needed to choose their most important activities. However, I was able to group some activities together (e Political volunteering) and allude to others under academic awards/honors. I also attached a resume listing all of my involvement and other "hooks" in case they did want to see everything. If theyfind the resume to be too much, they can simply remove it from my admissions folder. Just my two cents though. Good Luck!

I fit all my activities but I had done many other things in those activities that I listed in the Additional Information box.
