If a school offers its own online application AND the common application, should you automatically choose their own application? There is one school I’m thinking of - the common application shows more of what a student has done than the school’s own application- so in that case wouldn’t you choose the common app?

It depends on how many schools you are applying to. Since school that accept the common app do not differienate between it and the their own application use the common for as many schools as possible and just complete any and all supplemental information that the schools asks for. My daughter applied to 7 schools using the common app, it was a godsend as far as paper work goea sn she got accepted into all 7 schools

I think when the Common App was first introduced, there was some bias twoards it. I think that has dissipated substantially over time as it has become more commonplace.

Usually once you fill out the Common App and a supplement, you've answered most of the same questions as you would have if you had filled out the school's own app.
