I’d stick to the given word limit + 50 words max. Some essays might have been written for prompts that had a higher word limit. You really want to try and write your essay as if it’s a strict word limit because admissions officers have a lot of them to read, and it’s a pretty simple instruction. That being said, if you’re confident that you’re essay is really good and you can’t cut off any more without taking away from it, then being 30 words over is not too big a deal.
Common App has a tendency to cut off. Go under. And check that everything’s there before you submit it.
