For prompt #1 of the common app (Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story), I’ve been hearing that you should have some kind of unique essay topic if you plan on writing on this particular prompt (such as a disorder, a severe car crash, being part of a gang, etc.). However, my essay topic is pretty mundane, but I honestly feel that it encaptures my entire self. Can I use that mundane topic for prompt #1, or is the rumor that I’ve been hearing about only having a unique topic to write about for prompt #1 true?

I’ve actually read articles that say mundane topics are better. If you feel your topic shows who you are then go for it.
