Common App question.. another one

So, I just noticed that for some reason, after I submitted my Northwestern app, if I am to apply to Carnegie Mellon, it won't let me change things. I wrote a half-decent essay for Northwestern, but I know I could have written better if I wasn't so pushed by the deadline, so I was thinking of editing my essays for Carnegie Mellon, but it appears they won't let me. Does that mean I need to print out my common app, remove the essay, and mail my separate essay?

Ahh, another off-topic musing.

Freshman and sophomore year:

Are my grades good enough?

Junior year:

Are my test scores good enough?

Senior year:

Common app questions and Essay questions.

There is an ability to submit an alternate version of the common app. On the left side, click instructions and then look for something called alternate versions or something similar, and then follow the instructions very carefully. It allows you to vary the “writing” sections, including the main essay.

Oh, thanks!
