What does this mean? Am I just supposed to pick a good essay I wrote in high school, and tell them the title and word count? How does this help them? What is the point of this?

Best piece of writing is not necessarily an essay. It could be a research paper. Not all high schools teach research papers any longer though. They want to know what piece of writing you are proudest of having written and roughly how long it is so they know if it’s an essay, paragraph, research paper, etc.

Interesting question. I like it - it could provide a bit of insight into students (esp the Title part).

Since UR is a research university and many undergraduate student participate in research, this is an opportunity to talk about a topic that the applicant may be passionate about and let the university know about an original work that may not be covered in other areas of the application.

I am not privy to admissions process, but it may also be used to help determine which applicants may be good candidates for a Research and Innovation Grant (RIG), <a href=“Research and Innovation Grants : Funding : Office of Undergraduate Research : University of Rochester”>http://www.rochester.edu/college/ugresearch/rig.html

Bump. I’m really not sure how to do this section.

My D picked a paper she got an A on, and wrote the name of the paper in the common App Q for Rochester. Then she made a MyRoc account and attached the paper in the account
