Common App question

My D is filling out her activity area. She has been involved in a lot of community service, both inside and outside of NCL. She’s received the Presidential Gold and Bronze awards for two different years, and a handful of other service awards. She has also held two leadership positions.

When filling out the activity section, should she list this community service year by year (for a total of three awards and two positions) or just fill in one activity and try to combine it all together? I feel each year was very different- especially the number of hours worked each year differed substantially and it’s hard to fit it all in.

Thanks.

She can say See Additional Info, and bullet (concisely) by year in Additional Info.

It’s personal choice. If lack of space to list her other activities impedes here, she can combine. Otherwise, assuming it does not read as redundant, she can list separately.

Thank you. Her activity level is limited. 14-16 hours of dance a week plus community service and youth group, so not a huge list - all quality and not quantity. So there is room to spell out three separate years. If there is no perfect answer then we can just see how it looks. The # hours per year vastly differs as well though - so it’s not such a blanket number.

Our goal was always to make it as easy as possible for admissions to understand. So keep that in mind as you review your options. My kids didn’t let themselves be completely constrained by the format – like when they did this step of listing in additional info, they included relevant awards in that section (not in the separate section) so it was easier for admissions to see all of that area of focus info in one place. You can be sure they will read the whole application (and the admissions offices didn’t design the Common App). So you can flex a little for the sake of clarity.
