I posted the same thing in college admissions, but figured that someone here might know the answer:
On the Common App, in the Activities section, you can't type in the name of your activity; you have to select one from the drop down menu. This is perfectly fine when you have Dance or another specifically listed activity, but for something such as math bowl, you can only pick 'Science/Math.' Do I use the 'If relevant, describe details' part to just put Math Bowl? Is that all I would put in that section, or do I describe details about what Math Bowl is? Or do I describe how much effort I've put into a leadership role (if I have one?) If anyone could answer this I would be so grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, here's how I did it:

First, I thought about the seven activities that I most wanted to mention. I picked a broad category from the drop-down menu for each of them, filled in my amount of time (which in itself was a difficult process) and other things that they ask, then in the "describe details" box I put "[name of activity]: [short description]," e.g. "Math Bowl: compete in math competitions monthly" or whatever.

Then, I made a resume-like document that I plan to upload to the "Additional Info" section under "Writing." In it, I went into detail about what each organization does and what I do as a member. This document is also where I list additional activities that I didn't have room for in the seven spaces provided on the common app.

Thanks Poseur! This part of the common app is definitely a bit confusing, so thanks for answering my question! I'm probably going to upload a resume too. Did everyone else somewhat do the same thing for this section, and do you plan to upload a resume as well?
