i've spent days filling out my common app (just the forms), it just seems unending. :(

is there a place where you can paste up your resume, aka brag sheet?

short answer section: are you supposed to give one objective and informative paragraph about one activity, or are you allowed to write a creative mini-essay here?

activity sheet: to save space, i picked community service and combined my volunteer hours at different places to give an estimate of time/week, week/year, with the explanation: various volunteer activities. bad idea?

who's a better teacher to ask a recommendation from? I think the latter will give a better sense of who i am, but i did better in the former's class

teacher A: taught me three years, knows me fairly well. got As and 5 on the ap, was one of the top students w/o having to try very hard

teacher B: taught me one year in a subject i dreaded, knows me fairly well. I wasn't among the most brilliant kids in class, but worked my butt off to get an A and a 5 on the ap. my most difficult and appreciated class by far (and he knows it).

thanks in advance, and good luck to the class of 2007!

it's a bad idea to squish all your "Various" comm.service together into one column, no. of hrs, etc. colleges like specifics, and specifics also sound more believable. anyone could say that he or she participated in "community service" for x hours/week, but saying that you volunteered at the community kitchen for x hours/week is much stronger.

lunarchik, will it be ok if i say various community services, then give a detailed list in the additional info section? (i'm getting the feeling that my additional info's gonna be longer than my essay lol)

common app includes forms and a personal statement, aka the essay

supplements are forms required by individual colleges you are applying to. generally speaking, you are supposed to fill out the supplement online if you did your common app online

If your brag sheet is about one page, it might fit neatly in the "additional information" section on the common application. I'd suggest focusing in on only your most important activities, and not just repeating what they can learn elsewhere on the application.

It also perfectly fine to send in your brag sheet under separate cover if you submit your application electronically. Take advantage of the cover letter to explain why you feel the school and you are good matches. But, again, keep it to no more than two pages (one is best) and focus in only on things that can not be found elsewhere on your application, or that absolutely need further elaboration.

And, always, always, check first to make sure that the school accepts supplemental materials! Some don't, and you don't want to annoy them by ignoring their directions. :)

Regarding the short answer question on an activity: It is very, very difficult to write a "creative mini-essay" in under 200 words. I'd go for being more straight and direct, although a little creativity is fine.

I also have a question about the common app teachers' forms

In the teacher evaluation forms and the school couselor form, this year there is a part for applicants to decide whether to waive their right to access the forms and this part also requires the students to sign if they do agree. However, if I print it out and sign it, my teachers and school counselor would have to fill the remaining spaces of the forms BY HAND. It would be more convenient for them to download the forms I send them and fill those forms directly on their computer, especially when we-students usually apply to many schools at the same time. Just imagine! Having your teachers hand-write everything? On the other hand, if I send them my forms so that they could finish the forms on computer, I would no be able to sign the waiving part.

usually, you print them out, fill them out and sign them yourself, and then give them to teachers. they will fill out the non-writing sections (i.e. the check boxes or short answers) and then will type an actual recommendation, writing "see attached" on the commonapp sheet

i seriously think they should make a program that allows teachers to submit evaluation online, since some of teachers have highly illegible handwriting. you won't be able to tell a b from a l..
