I am in the process of filling out my Common Application for my desired schools,a dn I have about 6 schools on my list. I knwo for a fact that my counselor’s recommendation letter will work for all 6 schools, but I was wondering if the same would apply for the teacher recommendations.
I want to know if I should ask my two selected teachers for 6 recommendations each, or if just one would sufice for all 6 listed schools on my CommonApp.
Last admissions cycle, my D used the Common App and she submitted two teacher rec’s in addition to guidance counselor’s. Most, if not all, of her schools wanted two teachers plus counselor.
I believe the Common App recommendation process is set up to be user friendly to the teachers, so that they only have to write one rec, upload it, and submit it to all the schools.
My D chose her recommenders so that they would satisfy the requirements of each school. Some schools only want one and are very general about which teacher. Some schools have specific requirements such as a teacher in a core academic subject who taught you for a full year.
My D attended a boarding school on trimesters and often, even in a core subject, a student might have different teachers different trimesters, plus she went abroad, so she had to pick carefully.
My understanding is that teachers only need to write one recommendation which is uploaded into the common app and is sent to the schools you choose. DS is applying to one school that doesn’t take the common app, so they need to be uploaded to the school specific system as well. My rising senior was told by college counseling to choose (and ask) recommenders in spring of 11th grade. He chose one math and one history teacher, both of whom he had in 11th grade.
