Hi everyone, I'm kind of confused about the recommendations required for the Common Application. From my understanding we need two teacher recommendations, and a counselor recommendation, is this correct? Could I replace one of the teacher recommendations with a recommendation from a guidance counselor or a coach, etc? Also, is it okay to ask a teacher you had sophomore year? Thanks!

When you get into the ‘School Forms’ section for each school, it will tell you exactly what they want in terms of recommendations - counselor plus one teacher, or what maximum number of teacher recommendations they will accept. There was one school that didn’t want any teacher recommendations, and there was no way to include a teacher for that school.

As to who should be your recommenders, you may want to look closely at the school’s own website. Most want at least one academic teacher recommendation, but if they will accept more, you are probably free to use whoever you think knows you best and can give you the best review. (This may also vary with major and whether or not you plan to play a sport at college…)

Good luck!
