After re-reading the common application instructions and FAQ's I still don't understand the teacher recommendation processes, my teachers and counselors want to do everything by paper, and What I don't know is if I am applying to 5 schools do I need ten recommendations? or use the two for all the schools? Also, do I send my transcripts specifically to the schools or to the common application?

Nope, you can get two recommendations and send them both to each of the 5 schools. It doesn’t matter if they want to do them by paper-- it’s up to the teachers. Give them the recommendation form, along with envelopes that are stamped and addressed to the colleges (not the common app). The schools will match the paper forms with your online app.

Like rebeccar said, each of your teachers can, using the addressed envelopes and stamps that you will provide, write one recommendation that can then be photocopied and sent to all the schools to which you may later decide to apply.

To the school’s admissions office. Definitely not to common app.

A bit different question: On the common app, it asks to invite officials to submit recommendations online. Do people generally not do this? Would this replace having to give them all of the forms and stamped envelopes? This seems a lot simpler.

The common app faq says "You can submit your application online even if the teachers or counselors elect to complete hard copy forms. However, if they are electing to submit hard copy forms, you must identify and list them within the required fields on the application prior to being able to submit. You will still be able to submit your application even if your teachers or counselors haven’t completed their forms but their names must be listed within the application. If all of the required names are not listed, you will not be able to submit an application to any school.

If the teacher/counselor elects to opt out of the online forms, they may do so by clicking the link within their first notification email. Please encourage the teachers and counselors to fill out the forms online, however, since the schools prefer to receive this information online."

Here is a problem that I can see many students having: I am submitting my application online and I have invited my counselor and 2 teachers to submit online, but what if, say, one teacher wants to handwrite it? Is it ok to submit one online and two by paper?

Yes, recommendations can be a mixture of online and paper submissions. The common app faq says this: "You can submit your application online even if the teachers or counselors elect to complete hard copy forms.

I don’t have an option to list my counselor/teachers in the school forms section. It just says "Your school is using Naviance eDocs to complete the FERPA waiver and release authorization. If you have not already done so, please contact your counselor directly and they will provide instructions specific to your school regarding this document. "

However, I went to my counselor and she only told me that Naviance had some hook-ups so they wouldn’t be doing the recs online…but she didn’t tell me how to actually set it p.
