Common App short answer

I know the limit for the essay is like 150 words, but is that really the max? or can you go above tht one kinda like the personal statement.

limit means limit.

You can go above below, but keep in mind 50 extra words on a 150 word essay is much more obvious than 50 words on a 500 word essay

it seems to me that going over the word limit just shows that the person filing out the application can't listen to directions.

From what I recall, my short answer responses were approximately 300 words each, my personal statement was 700 words, and my supplementary essay was over 1000 words. WORD LIMITS DO NOT MATTER IN OF THEMSELVES. What IS important is that every part of your response is important, tells the adcoms something, and fits in with the rest. It should be CONCISE. Obviously, if your short answer response is 300 words, but contains a lot of fluff and could easily be shortened to 150 words without leaving out crucial info, then its very very bad. But if you really have something to say, say it.

I got into Harvard EA, MIT, and Stanford btw (just in case you were wondering my advice was valid)
