Finishing up my Common App to send out electronically (January 1 looms...eek)! Anyway, I had a question about the short answer section about extracurricular activities. I know going over the word limit is OK, but about how much is acceptable? My answer is about 50 words over the limit, and I can't seem to figure out how to cut anymore...help?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I always thought 150 words was a strict rule. Regardless, 50 words over is way too many.

Mine is exacly 200 words. I heard somewhere that it should be no more than 200 words. I don't know for sure though if that is true. I'm wondering the same thing as you....is that too many?

I'm wary of going over the 150 word limit. I actually just spent about an hour cutting my answer down to exactly 150 words. When you think about it, it's not to a college's advantage to reject a prospective student because his or her response was a few words over the limit, but I would stick to the limit as much as possible. Personally, I think 50 words over is still a lot compared with how long the response is supposed to be (it's like 1/4 of your response isn't supposed to be there!).
