common app supplement

It says that the commonapp essay fulfills the requirement, but you are still welcomed to answer two essay questions:
1) $10
2) class that had the most impact

is it possible to do only one? Do you guys recommend doing the addtitional essays? I really liked the $10 question, so I thought I might as well write an additional essay (it cannot take more than 30 mins).

if you complete the common application for JHU, you only need to submit one of the common application essays. HOWEVER, Hopkins does encourage you to (as the supplement states) do their two essays instead of or in addition to your common app. essay.

In fact, the adcoms at Hopkins STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you do the Hopkins essays as they prefer reading seeing the creativity and originality of applicants' $10 essays, and also appreciate the information one can provide in the "class" essay.

hope that helps.

does the favorite class question has to be a class? can it be other leaning options such as internship or even competition, seminar, etc?

The essay prompt states:

"By this point in your academic career you have taken a variety of courses, each with its own distinguishing characteristics. Which one has had the most influence on your interests and goals for the future and why?"

I would say that you could write about an academic internship, seminar, or summer enrichment program as those are course-related academic work. I am not sure if a "competition" like debate or Model UN would fit, since that is an extra-curricular activity.

I know there is always flexibility with how you respond to the essays, but I would suggest if you are really going to stray from the stated question you should check with one of the counselors at Hopkins.
