Real newbie questions - my kid hasn't submitted yet and I just want to check before she does.
So she has her common app, and she wants to apply by Nov 1 to schools A & B, and later to schools C & D.
Let's say they all have essay supplements.

So say she has her A, B, C, D on her Common App college list selected.

1) Can she submit her Common App even if she hasn't completed any of the supplements yet?
Or do the supplements need to be complete before she can submit?

2) When she submits the Common App, is it going to charge her whatever fees the colleges on her list ask for?
Let's say that they are $50 each - do we pay $200 right away?
Or does she need to complete each college supplement before she can submit & pay?

Thanks!

No, she must complete the supplements per college (if they have them) before submitting apps to colleges. Sent apps are final and cannot be edited later on once the college receives them.

1) You can send the application in two steps: 1, the main Common App along with the specific institutional questions, and 2, the writing supplement. If you go to the “My Schools” tab and click on a school, there will (usually) be two sections: one labelled “Application” that has the option “Review and Submit - Common App”, and the other is “Writing Supplement” which has the option “Review and Submit - Writing Supplement”. These can be sent at different times.

2) You will only be charged for one school at a time as you submit. So, if you submit to school A, you will be charged for school A only. If you wait a month then submit to school B, you will then be charged for school B only. I’m not sure which part of each school’s application the fee is attached to, but I believe it’s so that if you send in the Application for school A, you will be charged for school A, and then you submit the Writing Supplement later at no additional cost.
