so i know on the common app you can write down the ap scores, but i mean, would you guys recommend to post them ONLY if they're 4 or 5? im thinking about applying to many top liberal arts schools... if that helps or makes a difference.

i’d really like to know this too. i wouldn’t want to not submit them and colleges think i’m hiding poor grades or to submit them and see my grades and think i’m not smart enough.

Here’s a kind of helpful guide:

4 - 5: Helps Application by removing suspicion of grade inflation.
3: Does nothing to your application
1 - 2: May hurt your application but I highly doubt it. Maybe they’ll only look to see if there’s grade inflation.

i agree with eggman
you should put a score of 3+ on your app if you’ve taken a class
if it’s a 1/2…you have to think about it and it depends on the subject too
however, if you have self studied, then only put scores of 4/5

i tend to think 3s are alright but not good…it’s better if they weren’t there but taking a class and not taking an exam is MUCH worse than getting a 3

How bad does it look if you didn’t take the AP test at all for one subject?

^ idk…i was told it looks bad especially if you had a class in school for it
but if you took it outside of school/self-study…then it’s no prob

thanks guys :)

gosh, im kinda confused tho. everything is a mystery. ill just follow my heart hahah

so would it be stupid to leave 3s off my common app?

Put 3s on there and put it in the middle of your 4s/5s (serial positioning effect - AP Psych at work). Leave the 1s and 2s off.

What if you didn’t take one of your AP exams for monetary reason? My family is low-income, but now low-income enough for a fee waiver. Also - Don’t you send your AP score report, not self-report?

^^ bump!! score report vs self report for ap?

I got two 3s and a 4 so I guess I can’t really strategically order them.

3-3-4

4-3-3

3-4-3

Which looks best? I’d say the middle.

I’ll make the four really big in the middle and the threes really small and they may only notice the four or maybe 3-3-4 cause it would have the whole “upward trend” thing going for me or I’ll just put them in a ramdom order and stop worrying about it.

Situation: I took AP Physics B this year, but the class was so ridiculously terrible that we only covered chapters 1-5 (in a book of 32 chapters). I knew I would not be taking the AP exam, so I decided to take the AP English Language exam even though I hadn’t taken the class. Well, I got a 5 on Calculus and English, and a 4 on US History. How badly will not taking AP Physics look? It wasn’t lack of effort on my part, it was the fact that the class did not cover NEARLY enough material. The math/science genius of the senior class was the only one to take the exam, and he got a 2. I was a junior, so I was afraid it would hurt my app if I took the exam. He was off to Cornell for engineering as it was, so it was kind of a “what the heck” kind of thing.
