I've started looking to writing my essay for the Common App, but I'm having some difficulty with it. Every resource I've seen for transfers talks about how you should give details on why you want to go to a specific school, but since you have to write one essay for all of the schools you apply to... it's impossible to get specific for each school. The supplements allow you to explain why you want to attend a particular school, but then what are you supposed to write in the general Common App essay?

Are you just supposed to explain why your current school doesn't work for you?

First, you can make different versions of the CA, including your essay if you want to. Yes, I know what the CA says, but if a college doesn’t have a supplement that asks why you want to go there, then you should address it in the main CA essay.

If a school does have a supplemental question asking why you want to attend that school, use that to detail the specifics of why that college is right for you. In your main CA essay you can address why your current school isn’t working for you and generalities about what you are looking for in a transfer school.
