When a school accepts common app (+supplement), but also has its own full app, is it advantageous to submit the school's own app? Most schools, at least on paper, say it doesn't matter which you submit.

They do not care. If you go, for example, to the JHU forum, Admissions Daniel is asked this CONSTANTLY. They DO NOT CARE. If they have their own essay topic which they prefer, they will say so and then it is a good idea to use it instead of the generic Common App prompt. But most put this right in their supplements.

Every school which accepts common app says it does not matter. And they do not. Most of those schools have supplements where they ask you why this school? type of question. Write a superb essay there. If they do not have supplement you still might add short essay stating how that school will benefit from accepting you. Remember, do not tell schools how good they are and that is why you want to go there. Schools do know how good they are. They need to know why should they choose you and what is so special about you...

I said it before and I'll say it again--use the application that lets you put forward in the best way the info you want the admissions committee to consider. The schools say that it doesn't matter to them (and my D's experience was that it seemed to be true), so use the form that is most advantageous to you.
