common app vs. college app

do colleges like to see u use the common app or its own app?

Each college that agrees to accept the common app agrees to not favor their own app form over the common app form. Some people find this hard to believe, and who really knows what is going on in the adcoms. My own opinion is that if what form you use makes a difference, then forget the whole thing. I can't think of any reason why it would matter.

If you are more comfortable not using the common app, then don't. A good compromise might be to use the common app, but to fill each one out in ink instead of xeroxing it.

Some colleges do not have their own app forms, but use the common app exclusively.

Most very and extremely selective colleges that use the common app have supplements that have to be filled out with additional questions, usually more essays.

what if i want to only let some schools that use my common app see some of my scores (like I have a good act scores but not so good sat)

For what it's worth, it's free to use the Common App for some schools, but they charge to use their own. Go figure.

If you fill out the common app separately for each school (not just xerox it), then you can tailor it towards each school however you want.

The reason that some people don't want to use the common app is that they think the adcoms will interpret it as a lack of interest in their own school. Hernandez in "A is for Admissions" said this in 1997, but she backed off of it in her newer book "Acing the College Application".
