im sure there is a thread for this, but i dont feel like searching this board for it.
i know there are schools that only take the common app, but there are others that offer both the common app and their own app (im assuming they do to make my life easier because they know noone is stupid enough to apply to one college). do these schools prefer me to use their app, or could they care less which app i use? or does it vary from school to school?

Some schools will flat out tell you they treat all apps equally (like Duke). At other schools, the commonapp is the only way to submit apps online (again like Duke). Sometimes, some schools waive application fee for the commonapp (like Colby). And some schools only accept the commonapp or only accept their own app. But according to my college counselor, if you really want to go to a school (i.e. your top choice) then submitting that school's own app might be counted as showing interest. But no one will tell you that outright and not all school do that.

does any one else have any insight?

You do understand that research is going to be a big part of your next 4 years of college (even more if you go on to professional school, so it would serve you well to learn how. Keep in mind no one here as more of a vested interest in your college choice than you and only you know exactly the information that you are looking for.

i think sybbie misunderstood my question. i know which schools take common app and which ones offer their own and all that. what i cant seem to find, is if schools that offer both would prefer one or the other. when one school visited my area i went to their meeting and they kept highlighting how they offered the common app. that got me thinking if it is advantageous to use the unique app the college offers. no college has given me a straight answer, but many people on this site have experience applying and was wondering if anyone knew, or got the impression that colleges like to see their unique app over the common app.

when the colleges make a contract with the common app program, they declare a statement that they will not discriminate which apps the prospective students submit--that is, the colleges do not (and should not) prefer one app type over another.

imkonadian is correct that schools that take the common app, do not discriminate between "their" application and the common app. In fact a number of selective schools (Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore ) exclusively use the common application.

There are a number of threads posting about the common App.

hope these help
