Do colleges really mind if an applicant chooses to sumbit the common app rather than their personalized application?

No. If they accept the Common App, then they have bound themselves to an agreement that they will not show preference to type of application. Anyway, most selective colleges require their supplement in addition to the Common App, so how much of a difference is there really?

True-- it just seems like there might be an underlying preference.

Bookworm - I thought this too when D was applying a couple of years ago, but her counselor insisted that the common app was truly given equal status, even at the most selective schools.
D used common app- written once and copied 8 times- and was accepted everywhere - don't worry about which app - just do what makes sense for you and concentrate on making it stand out. (You can personalize each to fit the different schools, if you like) Harvard ONLY takes the common, you know. If it's good enough for them....

Thanks for your input. I know people who stressed over filling out ten applications and I would prefer to avoid that extra work/
