question… is AP Scholar with Honor appropriate to put under the Awards section (5,5,4,3) even if I haven’t received an official letter from collegeboard?

kjj17: I’m sure some schools do that. It depends on the school. There’s no official rule that applies to every school.

AKittka: I think you should wait until you get the actual letter. I got my official certificate before college admissions were due. You just have to wait a few months. I’m sure you can put it down right now, though, but I think it’s just better to wait. There’s no rush.

dchow you are the man .. or woman, not sure lol. you answer almost all of my questions haha. but thanks. i wasn’t sure if i was going to receive the certificate this year since i’m still taking 4 more APs senior year. i don’t think AP scholar with honor will look too special, but I don’t have many awards so it’s a nice filler.

thanks dchow :)

question about honors/awards

I’ve received academic scholarship awards for tuition at my high school and full academic/merit scholarship awards for some summer academic programs at colleges; should I put these down under honors? I feel like they are academic awards/honors but don’t want to look like I’m stretching things

Yeah, I wouldn’t put them down.

sorry if this question has already been asked… but i don´t wanna look bck to thge previous pages … does the personal essay in the common app has to be 500 words or 1000?.. im confused.

It’s called the search function. ;)

But, to answer your question, there is no set maximum limit. Most people advise you to keep it around 500 words as a loose limit, but more (up to 1000 or so) is ok if necessary (i.e. deleting any of it would harm the essay’s fluency/structure/etc.). Beyond 1000 is generally too much.

how much fee is there for the common app for international students?

dchow08 , no it’s not 37%. He asked a very valid question, because NYU’s admission rate this year has fallen a TON.

NYU’s Current Admission rate is 24%.

Are you sure the 24% acceptance rate includes GSP (General Studies Program) as well? I think it’s 37% with GSP. Either way, it’s low.

dchow, about the NHD thing,
well I see it as an extracurricular activity because I feel like academic honor implies that there was not much outside work involved and that the honor is based on school/test performance rather than research, groupwork, presentation, time outside school, and such.
I would like to list all the awards I got for NHD but I can’t seem to fit them in the space given for “honors won” in the EC category
should I just include an activities list in Addt’l info?

If you do list honors, don’t list the itty-bitty honors that you can leave out. Again, consider what the significance of putting awards on the app is. Does it even contribute much to the colleges’ understanding of you? You can do an activities list in additional info, but I recommend that you don’t and just list the most significant awards.

It appears from the common app that the only standardized tests you are allowed to record are the SAT ACT or TOEFL. If I want to take the GMAT and/or GRE to impress colleges/get them over with, where would I record this? Do most ppl attach a resume with their app that could be a place to put GMAT/GRE scores?

Additional information section. There really is no need to take either the GMAT or GRE though.

How should I list sports that I play for a club team, outside of school? Would I just mark it as “non-varsity athletics” and then describe it?

When I apply online through the common app, can I give paper recommendation forms to my teachers and a paper school report form to my counselor and mail just those forms?

Hey Guys,

I’m looking at a few schools like UPenn and Northwestern to include in my Common App for the 2008 application year. One major question that people don’t seem to have the answer to is how admission to special programs is handled. Let’s take UPenn’s Jerome Fisher M&T program at Wharton and Northwestern’s HPME (Honors Program in Medical Education) if I am rejected from these special programs but would still like to attend the school through the normal College of Arts and Science (or whatever the regular school would be), can I still be considered for that? Or, if I am rejected from HPME or the Wharton M&T programs, am I also automatically eliminated from consideration for UPenn and Northwestern as a whole? Thanks.

Yes.

Yep, that’s how most people do it.

20000568: Look at the thread on rec letters first.
