I second that. dchow has been more than helpful about everything here. I applaud his efforts and advice and wish him a great summer. :)

I have two quick questions:

1) For the EC short answer, would it be okay to talk about an activity you didn’t actually list in the EC section?

2) Would writing/essay contests be okay under the Honors section?

Thanks in advance! :)

^ Wow you do use your brains don’t you?? First, you would write in the short essay about “the most important, defining EC” in your school life, and wouldn’t put in the EC list? Cool!!

As for the 2nd question, was that essay writing judged by any means on what you learned in school? Was it a school contest? Was it conducted by a private third party? You can figure it out buddy!!

Welcome in advance! :)

Actually,

1) I think I’ve heard of a couple of people who have done that.

2) I can barely remember what the CommonApp looked like (omg it’s been 7 months??), but.. yeah they should be okay. Local/National level, I assume?

Please! If your EC is not worth listing, its definitely worth writing about! Or maybe, the poster meant something else …

Don’t listen to them, sartorialiste. it absolutely depends on the case. obviously, if you are writing your essay about how an EC changed your life, it ought to be included in your EC list. however, if you, for instance, do as I did last year - that is, write an essay about how you learned something from an activity that fizzled out and failed to materialize into anything, then of course you can do it. it all depends on the kind of essay you’re writing. would you care to share how you’re incorporating this EC into your essay?

Yeah sartorialiste, please mention what your EC is, and why so do you feel you should write your essay on it but not include in the list … it will be better for us to understand. And if the case if like ^ its a fine idea!!

To everyone - If posting problems please make it explanatory to avoid responses which you may not like! Cheers!

I was thinking of highlighting my creative writing in the activity short answer section, because I wasn’t really sure about putting that down as an actual EC. It’s a big enough part of me that I’d like to talk about it somewhere on an application, but I never considered that really an EC. I think that small space is probably too limited for me to discuss this appropriately, though… it’s probably more conducive to addressing more concrete things, so I’ll probably just write about a club that I’ve done a lot for and reserve the creative writing for an actual essay.

Limitedvocab - yeah, they’re local and national. I thought this was just the “awards” section, but I got kind of confused at how they specify academic honors and etc. I guess they’re trying to differentiate from things like music and art awards, maybe? I guess writing is academic enough.

Thanks to everyone for the help… even adrivit, I guess. :D

Look (green devils apart) I really feel that if Creative Writing is a major part of your life and you have devoted to it a great amount of time, it should definitely come both first in the list and in the short essay. Anything done outside the school curriculum is an EC, be it Creative Writing or for that matter teaching students of lower classes. You get me, don’t you? Clubs and organizations are not the only ECs around, absolutely anything that you have devoted substantial time to is an EC (took part in competitions, published write-ups in papers and magazines, anything …) I hope the color of the smiley changes now!!

Oh wait, if that’s the case (and if I understood everything correctly), then I think you can list Creative Writing as an EC, and together with that, include the writing contest awards and stuff in the EC section. And then it’s up to you if you still want to do your short activities essay on writing as well.

Someone else should confirm this though.

how would you put cheerleading as an extra curricular on the common app?

its not listed under sports (grrr… anyone who cheers knows it IS a sport) unless i put it as “athletics - nonvarsity”, but i am on the varsity squad at my school so thats not really true.
then there’s option two where i can list the activity as “school-spirit” related.
then there’s other.

for all three there’s a blank at the bottom where i can put the name varsity cheerleading. which option is most clear 1, 2 or 3?

I would put 2.

When submitting the application, can you choose which school you send it to? I’m applying to 4 w/ the common app- one is EA, so I was wondering if it submits tham all at once or if you get to choose. Thanks!

Can anybody comment on if i played on a varsity squad in several sports, but i did not perform well enough to letter am i allowed to put down my EC as a varsity sport or does it have to be shown as non-varsity? thanks

So I began filling out the common app and in academics it asks about the school you currently attend. I transfered schools after my sophomore year so would i put my entry date as 09/2007 or should i put the 09/2005 for the start of my freshman year. Basically did the want the date of entry into high school or into the current school. Thanks.

MODERATOR NOTE to “Common App Question” thread:

I’ll merge this thread with: CA Q&A sticky thread.

How ever you want to. Really, it doesn’t matter since you put cheerleading in the description section.

No, when you submit it, it is sent to all of the schools you have listed.

You played on a varsity squad. Ergo, you played a varsity sport.

Date of entry for your current school. You should check the box that asks if you have attended any other secondary schools (since you have) and fill in that information as well.

thanks for the response aeneas

Butternut: Actually, the answer to your question is YES. There is a way to make another copy of your common app after you have submitted it to a school. Of course, you cannot submit it to that same school again. Follow the directions on this page: http://s3.parature.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=104
The Common app has done this to allow you to make “school specific” applications.

Can you just put your best sitting, or should you put all tests taken, even if some are way better than others?

quick question…under the ethinicity section, whats the diff between asian and asain including indian subcontinent if you can pick all of the same countries…should I just pick both and be redundant or only one?
