i asked the common app tech support and they said

You should self report all of the tests you have taken that are asked for on the application.

so i guess yea u put everything cuz you stilll have to send the official score report from collegeboard to the schools so u couldnt hide any tests because it shows everything.
that sux i knw

Do you have to put down all your SAT scores in common app space, or can you put down just your best ones?

If I am pretty sure my major will be civil or chemical engineering, but I am leaning towards civil, should I put engineering undeclared because it is difficult to change your mind, or is civil engineering fine? Also, does it increase your chances if your major is more specific because you seem more focused?

lol adrivit, the smiley is just : D without a space, the green doesn’t really mean anything as far as I know. no ill will there.

Thinking more on this, I’m really considering listing the creative writing as an actual EC then. limitedvocab, I might do what you suggested, but one of my biggest awards is an essay contest on a social studies topic… I mean, it’s writing but not creative writing. So I’m thinking of just putting the creative writing awards in the EC section, but leaving the history essay contest in the academic honors. Does that sound about right?

dawgfan, what you put as your prospective major doesn’t really matter. You’re not actually declaring it right now and they’re just using that to get a general idea of your interests.

dabulls, if you’re Indian/Pakistani/Bengali/etc put Asian including Indian subcontinent; if you’re Chinese/Japanese/Korea/etc put Asian.

hey here’s a quick question about the art supplement on this year’s common app.

i play violin, and was wondering if colleges are really going to care if i submit the whole art supplement if i am not applying to a music school or if i have not listed music as a career interest (i’ve listed biology, pre-med stuff, etc.). i’m not really familiar with the standard here, and would hate to waste my time hunting down a recommendation and recording 10 minutes of music for something that really wont help much.

basically, will they care if i just consider my violin playing extracurricular? on the other hand, will they be suspicious if for example, i write an essay about my interest in the violin but do not submit the art supplement? what do you guys think?

I think you should submit it. I play the tabla and it’s an indian classical percussion instrument, and it won’t be my major or anything in college But still it’s something big, so yea you should submit the supplement.

thanks sartorialiste…and kind of back tracking if anyone took the ACT do you know if their official score report is like the collegeboard’s and has all of your scores?

so another few Q’s about the art supplement:

is the recommendation letter (which the supplement says to upload to the computer) supposed to be addressing the specific schools, or just be general because its the common app? basically what i’m saying is, does the app treat each school you’re applying to as a diff. art supplement, or is it the same exact supplement being sent to all schools? would the recommendation writer then have to address the common app in the letter? how does this work

i noticed in the instructions that it says to have the instructor send in a copy of the letter to each school. but isn’t that already what i am doing by uploading a copy of the letter??!?!?

grrrrrrr the common app is easily the most confusing thing in my entire life.

So exactly what type of information should I put in the additional information? A little bit about myself? Extra awards? How I spent my summer? Talk about EC’s?

mrhaha221: You can put anything that you feel is relevant, and would “add” to the personality already created in the application. Don’t put int favorite TV Show, or maybe the Student Of The Week Award you may have won, but surely so you can put some information about your family, or otherwise which may help them to assess you and your application better. You get it, don’t you?

kfive: As far I feel, the CommonApp puts application to different schools differently, i.e, you can apps of different schools differently. So, using this chance, maybe your recommender can write you a recommendation and you can make several copies, each having the name of the specific on it. I guess that would be OK.

To all: The CommonApp is the vaguest possible thing ever created, but we gotta put up with it my friends, so lets not fret! Cheers!

I attended a university’s program for high school AP credit… so would I list it under the secondary school summer school, etc. or the college/university credit courses?

The common app asks to list courses and the number of credits each course is. If I’m taking a one-credit course over two semesters, do I put “one credit” in both the Semester 1 and Semester 2 boxes or should I break it into “.5 credit” for each semester?

I run cross-country and spring and winter track. I’m not great, but my app is mainly academic and I’d like to point out the time and effort I put into sports. I have a cross-country varsity letter and several league- and county-level JV awards in track. Is something like “3rd in league mile, JV” worth mentioning? I’m sort of torn, because it points out that I’m involved in sports but it’s obviously nothing great in terms of athletics.

I’m currently taking BC calculus through [CTY Online](http://cty.jhu.edu/cde/index.html), and I’ll probably get an A+. Should I attach my CTY transcript to my application, and if not, how should I mention this course?

I have some general (and overly simple, maybe) questions about the common app i did not find answers to in the FAQ above. I’d be grateful if someone could answer.

1) Where do Americans generally put AP scores on the app? I have done A levels that are generally considered AP+ standard, and I was wondering where to place those.

2) In the ECs section, if I got some work i did During the school year AND in summers, do i make 2 separate entries for it?

3) Is it generally appropriate to include a description of your ECs on the Additional Info section?

4) Do unpaid internships come under work experience or ECs?

5) Would learning a language just for fun be an EC? I was wondering where to put that.

6) Can the additional info section be used to include your reasons to apply to a school ED?

Sorry if this sounds a bit too simple. I ain’t ready to take any risks.
