Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

Hey I want to know about the waivers too (as an int’l student)

For the common app: when i go on their site i see Complete First-Year Application Packet.

Should i fill out the entire packet?

I don’t think what you say is clear … you have to select colleges, fill-in apps as time permits you. Slowly, carefully, over time and submit it when all’s done. Please search this forum for complete instructions, its tad too long and tiresome to repeat over and over again!

Is the site not functioning correctly right now? I am trying to access my information on my application and it keeps saying “Error - Cannot find the form, please contact technical support.” Frustrated…

Adrvit: I already have spent a lot of sleepness nights on the process and i know how it works :stuck_out_tongue:

All i was asking is when colleges say to fill out the common app , does that mean fill out the Complete First-Year Application Packet. OR are there somethings in there that i shouldn’t fill out

@robertdwsmith: Sign up for an account and you fill the app online. The “Complete First-Year Application Packet” is for if you want to print it out and send it via mail. Many colleges now require you to electronically send the app.

what do they mean when they ask for the classes you are taking first term and second term (if you are a mid-year graduate)? this is from the UPENN supplement.

Im confused bc my school has quarters (4), not terms. I graduate in a normal full year, unless mid-year means halfway through 2009.

Hi

 1. Can the short activity essay on the common app be around 260 words? I read somewhere that the length does not really matter.
 2. For the extracurriculars, I have an activity that started in April of my Grade 11 year, and I am not quite sure how to log it in. I am planning to check off grade 11 and grade 12 on the common app, and for the “weeks/year”, I am going to define the “year” as the time from January to December. This definition of “year” would basically get the same result if I averaged the number of weeks I did in Grade 11 and the number of weeks I am going to do in Grade 12. Is this acceptable?

Thanks

okay, i don’t know if this has been asked already or not.

a school that i’m applying to has multiple choices for supplemental essay prompts. there are two that I really like, so I was going to do one as the supplemental, and then the second as my common app essay using the “creat your own” option. i don’t want it to be my common app essay for every school, though, because that would look really bad. can i have a different common app essay for different schools?

260 (100+ over the supposed 150 limit) is a bit too much. I’m sure you can cut stuff out. I’d see no problem with 175 words. the admissions officer will most likely notice the increased length…

I guess…lol, to be honest, I was confused. but im sure someone else can help you out.

I would like to attach an activity list (not a resume) to the common application. How can I do that without handing in a printed copy of my application?

This activity list is a suggestion from a college admission book by Michele Hernandez.

Thank you very much!

You can attach an extra file/word doc in one section of the common app I believe

Pretty sure you can :)

I believe that they application is asking about a standard year, January to December. They’re looking, I believe, for the extent of your involvement in.commitment to an activity.

I have a question about the secondary school section. It says:
If you have attended any other Secondary Schools, summer schools, or programs since ninth grade, check this box

Does it mean I can put anything that I attended anytime between 9th-12th, or does it mean it has to be something that I STARTED in 9th grade.
Can I put a summer camp there?

Yes, you can create different versions of the Common App to send to different colleges. Click on Instructions on the left side, they will show you how to do it.

would ‘varsity letter’ for being mamnager of a school sport team b something u would put under ‘awards’? would it help…?

^ I think you put directly in your extracurricular list section - since the “Awards” section is only for “academic” awards
