Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

since I am in a cultural awareness club, under activities, would I put down cultural or other club/activity?

cultural sounds good :)

You guys, I’m sure the adcoms don’t care THAT much about the categories as long as they get a sense of what the activity is. Chinese Culture Awareness Club is obviously about Chinese culture.

I’m sorry if I sound harsh, but many of these questions are lacking common sense… even compared to me  Academic honors are for ACADEMIC honors (though if you consider science club to be an activity, then it gets hazy) and a lot of these questions can be answered just by thinking about them and writing what you would consider the activity as.

Adcoms are human and they’ll understand your categorization and take it in stride. Relax. :)

The essay on the other hand… blarghbahgbah.

uhmm, i got 2 varsity letters for being ‘manager’ of a sport (2 seasons) where would i add it on the app? SHOULD i add it…helpful or not?

if it’s important .. do add it …

you only send the scores from the dates you want to for the ACT. but for the SAT, college board will send all of them including your SAT2’s if you have any. You can’t pick and choose which ones to send.

no that is one of the advantages to the ACT you canhave them send just the dates you choose. But the SAT is changing to that format in March 2009 too.

How can you add an nationally recognized award you received in 8th grade? Can you do it?

I wouldn’t put it in. Put high school stuff in.

where do you put a volunteer award?

^ probably add. info.

Also, in the add info, instead of adding a resume or something, can I just detail my involvement in a club using bullet points? Or paragraph form, kind of like a statement? Sorry if that’s a stupid question, I just want to know a good format for detailing involvement in two clubs instead of using a resume.

question:
my common app essay is about an EC

would it be weird if i talked about a diff EC in the 150 word short answer question?

I want to present two sides of me, instead of simply reiterating the value of the first EC. But, I dont want them to question the validity of the passion i discuss for it in my essay by not stating it in the 150 word question.

thanks

^ No, it wouldn’t be weird. Go right ahead

sorry, I know this was answered in a different thread, but I cant find it. What is the ideal word length of your common application essay?

Should I put National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Math Honor Society under Honors/Awards or Activites? Spanish and Math only meet a few times a year and don’t much. NHS I won’t be heavily involved in until this year.

if you have extra room, then just put them in activities

joeylam2: There’s no ideal word length, but I recommend around 500 words or fewer. Some colleges have word limits. And you’ll find this question asked all the time on the College Essays forum.

would mom bachelors degree and dad 2 years college, both born in Indonesia and immigrated to US make me a first gen?

Alright I understand that what to put in Additional information, but what format should it be in? For example, I want to talk about my background, my family, what I do in the summer, summer programs, and volunteering hours, etc. Should I do bullet points, or maybe just a little essay? Sorry if this question is ridiculous, I just don’t know.

Use whatever format that suits your info better. If its rather official, use formal language. If it’s emotional, write a small essay on it. Be yourself. Use whatever means you find appropriate.
