For the Activities section on the Common App, can you list on things that you do for a hobby? I played a sport for the whole time I was in high school, but I wasn't ever on a real team. Have I just wasted all the time I spent doing that? Is there a way for me to report that so that they don't think I do nothing outside of my other activities? I did spend a considerable chunk of time playing, just not on a competitive team.

Yes, of course, hobbies can be ECs. They want to know what you do in your spare time. It does not have to be typical. I have heard if you are a big reader, you should put that down.

Yes, definitely. Too many people think an EC has to be part of a club or team or somehow organized. It can be anything you have devoted a lot of time to. Remember why they are asking: The schools want to know what you will contribute to the school and how you are different from everyone else.

You can, but it may not always be valuable information. Playing sports on a rec team = put down. Playing sports with your friends…not so much.

ok so I have basically wasted my time with that in terms of college applications.

I don’t believe so! Just put down the sport and how many hours a week you played it.
