Common Application REsume

Is the Resume mandatory for common app?

Where in the common app does it need to be uploaded?

Thanks

There is no need to attach a resume to your application. The activities and honors sections should provide ample room for you to describe your interests and accomplishments. However, if you do choose to upload a resume, you can do so in the Additional Information section. Note that you can only upload a single document to additional information, but there is no limit to what you can include in that document, as long as it meets the 500 KB file size.

Thanks a ton. So, is the resume optional?? typically why would people want to upload the resume when there is ample space otherwise?

The CC guys - are you all uploading the resume or not?

One of the posts in this thread was "3) Do you send your resume along with your Common Application? If so, does the resume have to fit within one page? "

and the answer was

"3) Yes, you send it along. No, it doesn’t have to fit one page. Though it might be a good idea to condense it. "

So, I was thinking the resume is mandatory…

Would it be advantageous to attach a resume?

I might do it because I have more activities to list and I feel my resume is more organized and has my thoughts down better…

This would totally depend on the school.

I think the chart is great. We are used to finding the pertinent info on the chart. I personally don’t think you need to devote time and energy to presenting the same information in a different format.

Since we can only attach one additional document, how would that work if we have a resume and we need to include something from another section? Would we type what we need to type for the other sections on one page, and then start the resume on the second page of the document?

Yes. You would need to compile all of your additional information into a single document and upload that.

Thank you for your help. :)

IME, there has to be a real need for the resume. It’s not a fancy trick that automatically impresses- it’s one more thing a reviewer has to read in the roughly 15 minutes you get (assuming they read it.) There’s an expectation you can reasonably organize ECs and awards in the CA. (Supposedly, the CA has more space this year for awards/honors-?)

Where it helps is when you have some significant detail that doesn’t logically fit in the EC section. But, since this is a judgment call, make sure you use your best judgment.

Saw the pdf common app form. Where is the slot to upload the resume?

If one wants to upload a research paper , is it possible? Or is only 1 upload feasible… Meaning either the resume or the paper in this case?

In the past years, it was online in the additional information section.

I would strongly discourage you from attaching a research paper to your common app, and instead consult the website of each individual school to look up their policies on research supplements. Some schools require specific supplement forms to be filled out, others do not welcome papers at all. In most cases, the admission officers do not have to background to understand your research, so the research papers are forwarded to school faculty for review. Moreover, no way will the adcom be able to read your paper in the twenty minute app review time. If you really want to showcase the research, add an abstract or summary, not the full paper.

In which place in the common app can the abstract or summary be added?

EC? Additional Info?

If EC, what can one write for the honors held, hours etc. Can it be left blank or does it accept a small abstract?

It is under the writing tab where you upload your essays. The first is the short answer, then the main common app essay. Beneath these, there is a section called “Additional Information”. It says you can upload anything you want to say there.

The common app does not give you very much space to describe the details of each activity and also limits you to 10 activities. So being able to upload a resume is helpful, especially if you have otherwise already prepared one.

Most kids waste the reviewers’ time with this. IME, it’s annoying. They repeat the same things already under EC’s. Worse, they reorganize it, so the reviewer has to look to see if something new is there. (Rarely is there something new- or needed.) They are hs kids, with limited experiences. Unless there is absolutely needed, new detail- something that truly matters to an adult adcom- skip it. Part of a great app is using the existing EC section intelligently.

I agree with looking forward. The operative words are “Additional information” so if it isn’t something covered in the EC section then add it here otherwise don’t.

Title the top “Additional EC information” and only talk about them.
Bullet the ECs you have that have “additional information only” then describe the extras.

If you restate your entire resume then the adcoms have to scan the whole paper to hunt for your “additional info” Make it easy for them to see the extras or they will them miss anyway.

If I want to expand on a particular EC (in this case, music) is it okay to have the resume devoted entirely to music? It would be the information that didn’t fit in the common app activity section- like additional awards and performances and summer programs.

Sure, why not. Sounds like it would really draw attention to this area that is important to you.

My teacher is sending the paper evaluation form. In the generated pdf file corresponding to the evaluation form, quite a few other fields like my name, address, school name etc. are already filled. However, the “CAID (Common App ID)” field on the second line does not get filled. What do I need to do to get that field auto-filled as well? One could write that field by hand of course; but, as I vaguely remember reading somewhere, some schools prefer that field to be in print.

Thanks.
