When I click "Invite" to send my teacher the forms, will I be able to assign that teacher to more than one college (I am applying to 3 colleges that require 2 teacher recs each, so if i ask 2 teachers to fill out my forms, will i be able to use those recommendations for all three colleges?) If so, how do I assign the teacher to more than one college? Will they have to submit the form 3 times, or just once? (I'm doing it all online)

yeah. i was wondering about the answers, too. anyone?

Can you tell me how you got to the “invite” part at all? I filled out most of my online application (I just haven’t uploaded my personal essay), and this “invite” button still won’t come up under School Forms. Can somebody help? Where and how do I find this button that will notify teachers that I want them rec (they’re already expecting this)?

After you put in the information to invite the teachers, you will assign them to whichever colleges that are on your list. You can do this under the “School Forms” option on the left of the main screen. Remember that you must assign the teachers to the schools - this is not automatic.

Each teacher has to only fill out the form once, you will be notified when the teacher starts the recommendation, when they complete it, and once you have submitted your application to the college you can also go back and see when the school downloaded the recommendation.

missemily, could you pleeeeease tell me where to find this “Invite” option for online teacher evaluations?

I cannot find it anywhere.

???

Here’s the 411:

You need to be a first-year applicant. If you are a transfer, you don’t invite your teachers. You just print out the forms and they get mailed to your colleges.

Go to the ‘Common Questions for Applicants’ page. Read it. All. And watch the movie. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll be enlightened about how the Common App works. Find enlightenment here: https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/FAQ.aspx

Fill in your high school information on the Academics section of the online application.

Go to the School Forms page. Read the instructions.

4a. If you high school is configured to submit school forms via Naviance (the instructions will tell you if this is the case) then you need to talk to your counselor and teachers and they will submit the forms electronically via Naviance. You won’t be able to invite your teachers from the Common App Online.

4b. If you high school does not use Naviance, you’ll see instructions telling you how to invite your teachers and counselor.

Still confused? Take a deep breath and re-read the instructions. Everything you need to get started is there. Search CC as a last resort. There’s a lot of information in these forums, but it’s not all correct or easy to understand.

Good luck!

I thought one of the nice benefits of common application is using a teacher and counselor rec for many schools while the teacher/ counselor only has to fill the form out once.

How do you use naviance? I want to set everything up so that my teacher can do my recommendation easily?

Naviance is a online system that helps your high school guidance office do what it does. It is something that your school would have to purchase and implement in order for you to use.

Add your high school information to the Education section and then complete the release authorization and FERPA waiver on the School Forms page. Then follow the instructions on the School Forms page. That page will tell you what you need.

I just asked this question in another place, but think this may be a good thread to tag onto to…

If the teacher plans to upload the rec letter on line by invite, can he edit/change the letter among schools? So, for example, can he write a more school specific version of rec (particulary for the ED school in this case)?

Thanks!

@travelfun: If your school uses Naviance, your teacher might be able to do this. He should check with your school’s counselor for more information. Otherwise, no: teachers (and counselors) cannot tailor their recommendations to individual schools. The process is designed to be one-and-done.

Thanks. That is unfortunate as we do not have Naviance. His rec teacher is actually an alum of son’s ED choice school and would be able to tailor his letter to son’s long time interest in school and why a good fit, etc… Oh well. I appreciate the information. :-)

Can we also skip this part and send them in by mail? One teacher who wrote me a recommendation has left the school system.

can they send in forms after we send in our application on common app or do they all have to go in at the same time? or does it depend on the college…? :/
