Hi. Does anyone know if either application is preferred with American ( common vs coalition ). My son is planning on applying early decision . Also, does American have additional essays as well to complete ? Thanks
I’m not sure about which they prefer. I don’t remember a distinction being made about using one over the other. You might look and see if there is a format difference that is preferable for you. The common application has more essay prompts, but they both have a submit an essay of your choice option. AU does have an additional essay. It is a two question prompt with a 400 word limit. The admission counselor said it was labeled as optional - but strongly recommended submitting it.

Thanks for the info . I think he might go with the coalition application because he likes one of the essay questions from that list . And thanks for the essay question. Seems like a good prompt .
I got that from the common app portal and I’m assuming it’s the same as the coalition app. We went with the common app, because it’s what our GC’s have the most experience with and advice for. I haven’t even seen anything about the coalition app from them. Is the coalition app more common out East?
Not sure if it is more common out this way or not . There was a meeting for senior parents at my son’s school last week , and they mentioned both applications. So I figured it was worth checking it out . The only reason he is leaning towards it is because of the essay question . Maybe worth asking his counselor and American as well . Thanks again
