It was at midnight last year - you might find this article from last September’s New York Times of interest:

It is already live! Good luck!

can someone please give me the link, I cant find it!!

rockvillemom: I agree. I won’t submit my ED app under October 31st. However, having 3 whole months to prepare essays is an advantage.

Do you guys know if there’s an advantage for sending in your CommonApp earlier than the ED/EA deadline (as in, the earlier, the better)? Or are all apps viewed the same (same interest levels of applicants) as long as they’re submitted by the deadline?

it’s out right now dude.

^ Posted 6 hours ago, dude. LOL.

LOLLLL sorry didn’t read the whole thing. good luck to y’all!

liv – hi again.

On submitting early – it may depend school by school. For example, at D’s HS, the belief was that it was important to get the UConn (in-state school) app in early, and that in some years, UConn basically admitted till they hit a certain number, after which time, it became much harder. * Early meant October, not August.

The rumor was that last year Tulane was similar – early submitters had a better chance at admission and merit scholarships – however, I don’t know that there is any hard proof that this is in fact correct for either Tulane or UConn.

Other schools specifically say that it doesn’t make a difference, and that they don’t necessarily even read them in the order in which they are received.

^ Gotcha. So it varies by school? Aside from rumors, is there a definite way to know which schools prefer to see applicants apply earlier than the deadline? Do you know about Michigan?

Do you know what order they do read them in? Is alphabetical common? I have a twin and don’t necessarily want our apps being compared side-by-side/ us being seen as a package deal of some kind.

Speaking of Tulane, follow up question: Do the use common app? I can’t find them…

^ Nope.

10

I’d look for each school’s common data set and see if they value displayed interest. I guess one way to show interest is applying early…but you definitely don’t have to apply on the first day the thing is out.

^ I think applying too early also shows you didn’t put as much time into your essays as you could have.

^ not necessarily true. They store all the apps in a database and then read the after the deadline. As far as I know, apps are not dated. But I think other than what “it shows them” it could literally effect you in terms that you could have done better than rushed it.

Unless it’s a spectacular essay, it’s probably not recommended

I would differentiate between schools that are rolling and schools that are early action. If the school is rolling - like Tulane - getting the app in early is helpful. Keep in mind that they won’t read a file until it is complete - test scores - transcript, etc. Getting the application in first generally makes it easier for the college to create your file and then add the transcript and test scores to it as they arrive. It is very possible to get an acceptance from a rolling school in October - so this is an example of where an early - but not a rushed submission - helps.

If the school is early action - there is no big advantage to getting your application in months early - but do get it in well before the deadline so that you have time to make sure they have matched all of your items to your file. Submitting an application on 10/31 for an 11/1 deadline is ridiculous - and then students complain when there file is not complete and they are pushed back from EA to RD. I would suggest getting EA apps submitted in the next 6-8 weeks so that you have time to verify the colleges have your test scores, letters of rec and so forth before the deadline.
