Is the common appl treated fairly?

Yes. Princeton is trying to enroll the best freshman class it can, not punish people for using an application form which it in fact endorses. I got in using the Common Application. There's a thread somewhere on here in which a bunch of people say whether they applied using the Princeton application or the Common Application and then whether they were accepted. I'm too lazy to find it for you, but it's worth checking out.

i got in using the common application. talking to the admissions rep who came to my school, she said 2 things that convinced me it was OK:

1) If a university subscribes to use the common app, it is illegal to discriminate between the common app and a university specific app

2) when she's reading applications, the apps are printed out in such a format that she can't even tell the difference.

Well you already got your answer, but I would just to add another "yes" from personal experience.

Thanks a lot!!
