Common Application

Hi guys.. I'm wondering how one would go about filling in the common application for entry in the year 2011? I'm having a gap year in 2010 to do the entry exams etc.

Many hugs xx

I’m really curious about this too,

I would have guessed one cannot apply unless they are still at school? But home school students can apply i hear, anyone know anything about this question?

The application for August 2011 entry should be available in July.

b@r!um- i think she meant more on what i elaborated on, how can you apply to a college if you do not have references from teachers and such since you’ll be on a gap year.
i’m curious about this…

you’d probably have to contact your teachers again… even if they made an exception waiving the recommendations, it would still hurt your chances somewhat compared to someone who had everything you did + a stellar rec

If you are using the paper application, you could get all of the recommendations and school report things completed now and save them until application season starts.

Otherwise, I would ask for letters of recommendation now and explain to the teachers that I won’t need them until the end of the summer and that I will contact them again later. I know it’s inconvenient but I would be super appreciative of their support!!!

b@r!um- doesn’t the paper application have the date of application on it? so that form couldn’t be used as a teacher’s recommendation?
i thought about that then realised it wont have the correct date so i’d be unable to have photocopies.

I took a gap year and had no problems applying through commonapp online. I constantly stayed in touch with my teachers and GC throughout the gap year and they were more than glad to fill out the forms online during oct/nov(I graduated around June). They were quite supportive throughout the process as well.

^ that’s good to hear ccprofile, i guess i’ll hope my teacher’s are as hopeful as that:)

The teacher recommendation forms state the admission cycle (“for Spring 2010 or Fall 2010 Enrollment”) but that’s typically the only item that changes in between years. You could just cross out the year and write 2011 on it. Colleges care about the content of the recommendation, not the form it’s on.

If you ask for recommendations in advance, I suggest you ask for a few more copies than you anticipate needing (say, 10). All in sealed and signed envelopes. You are not supposed to see the recommendation at all, so you would have to contact your teachers again if you needed an extra letter later.

oh ok i see thanks, so i’m actually allowed to apply for colleges with a crossed out number? is that a certain thing i can do?

i’m not exactly sure how the online one goes, do they just fill it in online and then send it to me? or do they send it straight to common appl and i never get to see it? because if the former then i could easily save such a thing.

You should come back to your high school and ask your teachers for recs. They are really very important, esp for selective schools.
