if i use the common application for JHU, then i dont have to use the JHU application? therefore, would my essay topics be different? i wont have to write about the $10 essay?
is this true for all colleges?

well, for hopkins you won't have to write the $10 essay, you only have to write a common app one. but hopkins also gives you the option to also submit a $10 essay. This is generally true for all schools with their own application that also accept the common app.

that is true...if you apply using the common app. you can submit the common app. essays instead of the 2 JHU essays (the $10 essay and one about your favorite class).

however, i would strongly recommend that you still write the JHU essays -- especially the $10 one. The adcoms really enjoy reading these essays and especially like the original and creative ones. The common app. essay topics are bland, and the essays tend to be bland as well. You want your essays to be unique, and answering the $10 question is an easy way to do that.

One other thing, remember when writing the $10 essay that it should be an ADVENTURE. The counselors are always complaining that "going to the beach" or "hanging with friends" or "buying 10 items off a dollar menu" are not adventures but just ways of wasting $10.

Good luck.

thx for advices
