common complaint about emory

I don't even remember how many times I have posted on this topic...perhaps I will whip something up later. (I am a sophomore, by the way).

FWIW...my son is an Emory freshman, and he loves it. He does not drink, nor is he interested in the frat row thing. He is serious about his education and studies a lot, but he definitely looks for ways to become involved in other activities and gets out of his dorm as much as possible. He likes the fact that Emory does not have a football team, does have great diversity in the student body, and does have high academic standards for admission. He also likes it that Emory has a healthy endowment, which can provide funds/resources for enriching opportunities. He also likes the student/teacher ratio and being able to get anywhere he needs to be on campus in no more than a 10 to 15 minute walk. He does look forward to having a car next year, but has found that by getting involved with group activities, a ride is not too hard to come by. 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students are friendly and sympathetic as they were once freshmen themselves.

I would agree with the above post.

Whether people want to say it or not, there is a divide between greeks and non-greeks. Often times it can be difficult if a large number of your friends go greek, as the rushing process (at least for guys) is very time-intensive. That being said, now that rush is over I see my greek friends quite a bit, and it works out well.

My advice: if you get involved in activities and organizations, and try to be as social as possible, you will be fine. You don't have to go greek, but a large number of people do, and from what friends have said, most of them love it.
