Common Man View on Selectivity

Has anyone had any experience with non college-savvy people that made short-sighted assumptions about some of the most competitive colleges (i.e, you'll never be rejected from Princeton with a 4.0, if you're from Wyoming you'll atuomatically get accepted to MIT, a black kid with a 3.5 can go to any college)? I think the assumption that high SATs means an auto-accept at any college is a common one I've hit.

a kid in my school scored 210 on the PSAT and everyone told him to apply to harvard for a sure acceptance. my school is nothing but non college-savvy people. that is both good and bad.

and sadly, a lot of the kids at my school don't even know what AA is, nor do they believe a black student could have a 3.5 gpa.

i win.

ha... my father is one of those people who thinks just because my SAT score is decent I'll be able to get in pretty much anywhere. I try to explain that a 2100 isn't even that great but he doesn't want to hear about it.

My father thinks that I can get in anywhere based solely on geographic residence. (Of around a dozen top applicants at my school, only one got into Harvard.)

<<and sadly,="" a="" lot="" of="" the="" kids="" at="" my="" school="" don't="" even="" know="" what="" aa="" is,="" nor="" do="" they="" believe="" black="" student="" could="" have="" 3.5="" gpa.="">></and>

where do you go to school, 1950??

I have definitely had that experience, especially with older relatives. They obviously applied to college when it was much less competitive, so as soon as I got back my SAT scores and they were good (only 10 pts. less than my target score), they thought I could go anywhere. It was no use trying to explain that there's no guarantees for anyone anymore. They just kept going back to, "But you got a xxxx on your SATs!"

yea amanda i've noticed this as well, my brother graduated from high school in 1994 he had the same courseload as me except only like a 3.50 GPA, a 1140 SAT score, and practically no EC's. He got accepted into UVA and William and Mary... I'm just like that wouldn't happen today...

also we are asian, were asians considered URMs back then?

Yale's acceptance rate when my parents graduated was around 35%.

That is just mindboggling nowadays.

... I wish college admissions wasn't so competitive these days, but like the "old" days
