Do all of you incoming freshmen know about the Common Reading Program? Rice will be sending you this book sometime soon:

so they send us the book in the mail or do we have to buy it?
thanks for the info, I had been wondering about this

They send it in the mail to you. You do not need to buy it.

It doesn’t sound like a book I’d typically read but hey, I’m up for it. Can’t wait!

Just to be clear… This isn’t mandatory like summer reading in highschool right?

No, it’s not mandatory. All incoming freshmen are encouraged to read it. There will be opportunities to discuss it. For last year’s book, “Three Cups of Tea”, the author came to Rice in the Fall to talk to students. Anyone could go hear him (although I think the number of spaces was actually somewhat limited), but you’d get more out of it, of course, if you’d read the book.

I will read it simply because I don’t tend to read a lot of stuff unless I am assigned something… so I’ll definitely read this even though it isn’t mandatory

^really I’m just the opposite. Whenever I’m assigned something, I will do anything not to read it, often including reading something else.

^I tend to only like to read stuff I can discuss with others. And assignments are great opportunities to discuss stuff
