What exactly is in the common rooms? And does it differ with each building? If so, what is the common room of Jarvis like?

Common rooms are pretty much the same in every dorm. They have couches, a TV with cable, a piano, and some sort of recreational device. Giles has a ping pong table (which is broken... and was when we moved in last year), for example. I never made it into the Jarvis common room, so I'm not sure what else they have in there.

Also, to all of the Giles residents, you'll notice when you get to Duke that you are the only dorm that does not have a bench (or at least you were at the end of last school year). I beg of you to build one and write something cool on it. For my and my friends' sakes. Thank you.

Nooooot true. Blackwell tried to build a bench, but then it got smashed...and then we tried again, and it got written on with paint and turned upside down (which I actually found pretty funny), and then got smashed again. After that, we just gave up...so Blackwell doesn't have a bench either. And it was a nice bench while it lasted, too. Damn rivalries between the football guys who lived in our dorm and the lacrosse guys who lived in...uh, some other dorm (but shhh you did NOT hear that they did it from me...)

What "recreational device" does Jarvis have?

The Jarvis common room...it was pretty fantastic last year. There's a bunch of couches, floor pillows and whatnot. Last year we used House Council money to get a ping pong table, a nice stereo/dvd system, and a new TV. It's a pretty awesome common room, and there's always someone in there studying/watching tv or movies/playing ping pong, and it was always PACKED during basketball games.

There's also study rooms on each floor, with a piano in the first floor study room.

Ok ok fine... we were the only dorm that didn't put forth the effort to build a bench because our house council president didn't want to spend the money. Ironically, he will be an RA on the second floor in Giles this year. You can pound down his door when you're building the bench and make him work on it. ;)

I don't know...you may have been better off without one. what between Blackwell's bench smashing bandcampgirl talked about and the obscene vandalization of the Jarvis bench (though maybe slightly deserved...the first time), it was just a lot to worry about...lol.

Hahaha. The Jarvis/Aycock vandalization was really funny, though. My personal favorite vandalization was the Alspaugh bench...hahaha. I mean, personally, I wouldn't have cared if they kept painting on ours because I found the bench wars hilarious, it just sort of sucked that they...ruined our bench so we didn't have one at all. That was sort of a downer. But if they just kept painting stuff on ours, I wouldn't really have cared.

Yeah I mean, the painting was REALLY funny...especially GA and obviously Alspaugh, but there were some really vulgur things written on ours, especially what I woke up to the day I was going home for the summer. I mean, my dad had to walk up and see something really, um, innappropriate. It was totally funny, but it was kinda like, ugh.

Ahh, yeah that does suck - but I LOVED G-A's bench. I also love that they left it that way...and earned themselves a facebook group. Hahaha.

I think I actually laughed out loud everytime I walked past GA's bench. Fantastic:)

what did GA's say? or, what were some of the good bench moments last year?

Haha, well GA painted their bench to say GA UNIT, and some genius (I don't mean that sarcastically) added Y's to the end so it said "GAY UNITY." The facebook group is "We support GAy UNITy." Umm, Alspaugh now = Assplow. And loveduke can tell you more about the Jarvis/Aycock craziness, because all I really remember is that there was a lot of fun with the "AyCOCK" wordplay...it just lends itself to all kinds of trouble.

Completely unrelated to vandalism, but I still love and adore Bassett's bench (they're to the right of Brown, the sub-free dorm, and their bench has a big arrow pointing to the right and it says "WE'RE WITH SOBER.")

Immature? Yes. Fun as hell? Absolutely.

Haha thats so good. I remember seeing Basset's Bench from when I visited... because my mom thought it was the greatest thing ever, hahah. &so did I.

i was actually party responsible for the assplaugh bench "refurbishing project" we went out at about 3 AM having made stensils of what we wanted and just painted over what was already there. it took maybe 10 minutes and it lasted for about 3 or 4 months...definetaly paid off.
as for the "we're with sober" bench in front of bassett. as proud resident of bassett '05-'06, i can take FULL responsibility for that wonderful slogan. we had a little contest to see what our design would be...it was between "we're with sober" (my idea) and "wanna get boned?" (because of the bassett hound - stupid...i know). luckily we wen't with the "sober" idea and it provided many a proud moment for me.
don't mean to brag, but i am still very proud of both achievements, maybe my only 2 at duke so far.

it's an honor to post after you
