Post common Writing Section Errors here...

Subject-verb agreement.

verb tense

pronoun errors, singular-plural errors, idiom errors, comparison errors, and parallel structure errors

I think the hardest to spot are idiom errors and errors in diction.

i'm awful at idioms. to put this into perspective, i got an 800 cr and a 710 w in november... but all the questions i wasn't sure about were idiom questions--things like knowing what preposition to use in what phrase. sometimes i wish english weren't my third language. my grammar and spelling are virtually flawless, but idioms don't follow a logical pattern. you just have to KNOW, and that's not so easy if you've never heard the expression before.

yeah, i'm frustrated about this.

^ Wow, for a third-language-er, a 710's pretty freaking good. o.o

Anyway, there are always questions dealing with neither/either/everybody/etc. that people always miss because they think they're plural when they're actually singular. And 'had swum/had swam' questions which sometimes stump me because 'swum' doesn't even look like a real word. :|

neither/nor vs. either/or
one vs. you (needs to be consistent)

theres ALWAYS 1 or 2 dangling modifiers on the tests...

Looking out the window, the tree seemed beatuiful to John should be

Looking out the window, John saw the beautiful tree

Anyone know if writing questions go from easiest to hardest?

I thought they did. I'm probably not right though.

What about Since/because?

Anyone have any advice on how to handle errors in diction? And can someone please list some common mistakes in diction that are usually tested on the sats. thanks

diction...well

effect and affect...?

another problem is redundancy, and tautology...like "almost unique" is impossible, "its either unique or not unique"

almost 1/2 of the writing errors posted is subject / verb agreement
rest is everything ppl posted on here + sum others. they only have a couple on idioms / diction

writing section doesnt go in order...its the same as cr

"the reason horses are brown is because..."
should be
"the reason horses are brown is THAT"

reason NEVER goes with because

Diction
"perspective/prospective"
"disinterested/uninterested"
"between....and.." NOT "Between... or.."

oo,Ive read aboiut the "almost unique" thing but I actually havent seen it tested..., So far ive done the first 4 practice tests from the blue book and not one writing section asked about that....

Oh, also you can't say "most unique", because unique is already a superlative. I actually did see that on a practice test, and I got it wrong :-/

And can you guys give some examples of mistakes with idioms?

"Being" is always wrong, right?

I think Collegeboard just didn't like the word being.

Nash can you explain please :) would like to get a good score...lol
