I'm trying to decide what to put in my last awards blank on the commonapp. Would the Harvard Book Award carry more weight, or would putting YIG Most Outstanding Attorney (state) or 1st place state public forum debate be better? Both of the latter can be addressed in my extracurricular activities section though... Thanks!

hey, I ran into the same problem. I decided to not repeat any awards, and “grouped” them whenever I could under my activities.

thanks! I’ve been grouping things together too, and now I’m wondering how “legit” my groupings are. Would grouping Youth-in-Government and Debate together in the ECs be too much of a stretch since the drop-down menu has separate options for student government and for speech/debate?

By the awards section do you mean the academic “honors” section of commonapp?

“Briefly list any academic distinctions or honors you have received since the ninth grade or international equivalent (e.g. National Merit, Cum Laude Society).”

I’m not sure what falls under the category of “distinctions or honors” and what doesn’t. One-time achievements in scholastic ECs? Vague honors given for no specific occasion like Book Awards? If you take National Merit, for example, wouldn’t SAT scores sort of imply if you had made at least NM semi with PSAT? And wouldn’t the grades on your transcript also show them if you’re in Cum Laude?

What I did was list academic honors that are sort of not arbitrary (eg National Merit Semi, State Merit Award, AP Scholar). I figured that I’d include EC awards in the Activities section.

This is the exact same question I had. Some of my EC awards will not be mentioned in the EC section. Should I list my EC awards at the ‘honors’ section at the risk of being repetitive?

The thing with listing things like levels of AP Scholar and National Honor Society and such is that I feel like they’re already relatively obvious from other parts of your app…

i have the same problem. i put EC awards down in the honors portion… is that appropriate? idk.
