Commonapp essay

is it okay if we choose to do our own topic? or is that something that's just there, but nobody ever uses or is frowned upon for using?

I know a kid who wrote a STELLAR "pick your own" essay and was accepted to loads of selective colleges. All of the suggested topics just beg for cliche responses, I think. However, I've never been much of a gambler, so I'm just going to stick to the ones they provide. If I was a more creative writer I would probably go against the grain :)

i'm just that cool ;)

All my rough drafts so far fall under "choose your own topic." Like czechitout said, the suggested topics seem very cliche. And as a writer, I try to stay as far out of the box as I can.

I wrote the "choose your own topic" so I could write the same essay for every school. I guess it was a good one since I was accepted everywhere I applied. I know some others who did this, so if you want to, go for it.

the ones given are things you would write in middle school...unless you really do something extravagant with it
